Your income changes. Start with the numbers you have.

Laptop with an abstract spreadsheet grid, receipts, notebook and calculator for reviewing changing income records.

A strong income month can make the next month look easier than it is. If your pay changes, start by seeing those changes on a page. Your first task is to build an accurate record of what came in, rather than treating the best month as your usual month.

Choose a completed month. Gather the relevant payment records and enter the income you received. Keep actual figures separate from estimates and expected payments. An invoice you sent and money you received are different entries.

Record what actually happened

Choose a completed month. Gather the relevant payment records and enter the income you received. Keep actual figures separate from estimates and expected payments. An invoice you sent and money you received are different entries.

Repeat for another completed month when the records are available. Label any missing information so you can return to it instead of quietly filling the gap with a guess.

Put essential costs beside the income record

List the recurring costs you need to account for and check them against current bills. Make the period clear: monthly, annual or another interval. A record is useful only if the amounts and time periods can be understood together.

Keep a short note of the assumptions you are using. If a bill changes or a payment arrives later than expected, you can update the record without rebuilding the whole plan from memory.

Use examples as examples

A sample spreadsheet can help you learn where to enter information. It cannot choose the right assumptions for your circumstances. Replace sample figures before relying on your saved file, and check that the totals reflect your entries.

The Irregular Income Budget Planner includes a 12-month income log, a calculated baseline based on the lowest logged net-income month, an essentials summary and editable planning assumptions. Any sample tax set-aside percentage is an example, not a recommendation for what you owe.

Make the next review easier
